Cap space? Cap space! Don't talk about cap space!

I really do wonder why we still refer to this time of the year as the “offseason”.

Yes, I know that there are a lot of bandwagon fans out there who won’t check their team’s roster until they buy a program on opening day. For the rest of us, this is no time to be “off” at all.

With a flurry of rumors swarming the Raider franchise like a flock of reporters stalking A-Rod’s apartment, this so-called “offseason” is going to be hectic.

Here are just a few of the issues we’ll be tracking here at JBB. Stay tuned for updates as these story lines unfold:

February 19th is the deadline for Al Davis to notify Nnamdi Asomugha that he will be slapped with the Franchise Tag…again. There are rumors that there is talk of a 6 year contract in the works. My bet is that the messenger pigeon is already in flight and will land at Nnamdi’s residence one minute before the deadline…

If Nnamdi is tagged, then Shane Lechler will be the next concern. After being given a Romanowski hand shake by Terdell Sands this past season, it will take serious Javon Walker money and a body guard to keep Shane in Oakland…

Jake Grove has opted out of his contract leaving the Raider offensive line with a hole in the middle. Krispy Kreme anyone?

Who’s getting the axe? Huff Daddy? Terdell Romanowski? Ron Curry?

Who’s going to be a Raider in 2009? T.O.? Vick? Plaxico? Ocho Stinko? Mike Tyson? Bernie Madoff?

Chris Johnson  is under contract. Just think, all it took was getting DeAngelo for a cool $70 mil and then cutting him after paying out $8 mil to get Johnson signed to a 4 year deal. If only every contract negation could be that easy…

Who will be the next Raider to secretly have surgery? I’m giving 2 to 1 odds on Javon Walker having his wallet removed by a special laser treatment known as retirement

Free agency? With just about enough room to fit Nate Robinson (hey, he played DB at UW) under the cap, it’s going to take an Enron accountant to find a way for Al Davis to make a splash (follow the puns) in the free agent market. After last season’s spending tsunami yielded only 5 wins, I’ll be pleased if Mr. Davis decides to just opt for a simple cannonball into the free agency pool

The Draft? The combine begins this week and we’ve got yet another top 10 pick. That means more money up front for a guy that has proven nothing. If we don’t get a legit contributor who is ready to make an immediate impact in this draft, I’ll personally lobby Goodell for the right to have the next top 10 Raider pick be selected by a specially created game on The Price is Right. Think of the possibilities. How does “Plinko for the Raiders First Round Pick” sound?

All this and we’re not even a month removed from the Super Bowl. Keep your browsers locked here and set JBB to your favorites! I’ll be guiding you through an Indiana Jones-like adventure of an “offseason”.
