The Just Blog Baby 2009 Draft Diary

After months of hype and speculation, the 2009 NFL Draft is finally  here. I’ll be keeping a running diary as the drama unfolds. Keep it locked here, Raider Nation! We’ve got the best seat in the house to observe Tom Cable’s first taste of the war room.

5:49pm PST – Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment on the JBB Draft Diary today! I’ll write up a review of the first day and will post in later. Since I’m a holdover from the days of Raider football in Los Angeles, I’m checking out to watch my Lakers take on the Jazz in game 4. If Darrius Heyward-Bey is reading this, do us all a favor and get with JaMarcus NOW! We know you have the speed and you know J-Russ has the arm. Make it work.

5:44pm PST – Mel, Keyshawn and Berman are having fun with the Mitchell pick. Mel says that no other team had Mitchell going before round 5. Whatever the case may be, I’m not sure what the exact draft philosophy is this year, but Cable has finally gotten a heavy dose of Al Davis on the big stage.

5:38pm PST – Raiders select Ohio safety Michael Mitchell with the #47 pick in round 2. There was a lot of talk about Mitchell and Wake Forest safety Chip Vaughn around Raider Nation the last two weeks. At least we’re addressing needs on day one. Say what you will about Heyward-Bey, but we needed a play maker and he has that potential. I hope…

5:10pm PST – Why oh why do we still trade with the Pats? It wasn’t enough that we got jobbed by the “tuck rule” that we had to gift them 16-0 with Randy Moss? Now we give them our second round pick and they pick Ron Brace, a guy our “D” really needed. Oh boy…I’m wondering what’s going on in that war room with each passing minute. At least we have more picks, that’s a good thing when you have a lot of needs.

4:53pm PST – Eben Britton and William Beatty are still out there as far as OTs go. Ron Brace is still on the board if Al Davis decides he actually wants to do something to improve the 31st ranked run defense in the NFL.

4:43pm PST – Big shock, Todd McShay calls Heyward-Bey as the biggest reach in round one. Could’ve bet the house on that.

4:28pm PST – Did I mention that Eugene Monroe and B.J. Raji were still on the board when Al Davis sent in the call to pick Heyward-Bey?

3:37pm PST – If Robiskie or Nicks are still around in round two I’m really gonna loose it!

3:11pm PST – Still in shock. I’m hoping that there is some mega deal for Larry Fitzgerald, Julius Peppers or a GM in the works with this Heyward-Bey selection…

2:29 pm PST – I’m at a loss for words right now. We knew Al Davis has his eyes on Heyward-Bey, but with #7??? Really? Then Monroe and Raji go off the board right after that pick plus Crabtree will be in the Bay with the 49ers. Bad feelings about this…

1:58pm PST – Darrius Heyward-Bey is the Raiders pick at #7. Over Monroe and Raji…time will tell on this one…for now…I’m pissed…

1:51pm PST – Andre Smith goes to Cincy. Raji is there! Come on Al Davis!

1:41pm PST – The Jets trade with Cleveland to get Mark Sanchez. Wow! Oh yeah, and Seattle picked some guy named Aaron Curry.

1:25pm PST – The Chiefs just picked Tyson Jackson of LSU. Two years of top 10 defensive linemen for KC. This is a good fit for the 3-4.

1:21pm PST – Jason Smith goes to St. Louis. Now comes the real drama. What will the Chiefs do?

1:03pm PST – Roger Goodell just put the Lions on the clock and wasted no time. It’s official. Matthew Stafford welcome to obscurity.

12:57pm PST – Jason Smith of Baylor was just seen on his cell phone. We all know what that means. So much for St. Louis drafting Mark Sanchez.

12:30pm PST - Keyshawn Johnson just compared Jeremy Maclin to Eddie Kennison. Is that a bad omen or what?

12:19pm PST – Chris Mortensen just said he thinks B.J. Raji will fall out of the top 5 and could be on the board when we’re on the clock at #7. Somebody should put that on a Post-It and hand it to Tom Cable ASAP.
