From Jerry McDonald’s Twitter page comes the news that the Oakland Raiders are going to be without the services of fan favorite Nick Miller.
Locker room surprise _ Nick Miller’s shin splints is actually a hairline fracture of left ankle. Out 4 to 6 weeks. Doesn’t think he’ll be IR
Miller was an undrafted free agent from Southern Utah who played his way onto the 53-man roster with electrifying kick returns and some dazzling catches in the preseason. Louis Rankin took over kick return duties during the Monday Night loss to the Chargers and was unimpressive to say the least averaging just 16.8 yards on 4 returns.
While Miller wasn’t going to be much of a factor in the passing game, the news of the severity of his injury comes on the heels of Johnnie Lee Higgins injuring his shoulder in the season opener. Higgins was to have undergone an MRI yesterday with the results due today. Combined with the loss of Chaz Schilens, the continued inactivity of Javon Walker and the question marks are beginning to mount for Ted Tollner.
If Higgins is unable to play in Arrowhead on Sunday, then Miller’s loss will be magnified as the Raiders will have to find a new body to handle punt return duties as well. David White reports that Walker will be active on Sunday and he’ll be backing up Hiram Eugene on punt return.
