Trick or Treat: Raider Style

AUTHOR: | IN: Grades, Raiders | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

We’re halfway through the 2009 season and it’s time to take stock in the Oakland Raiders. Instead of issuing grades, I’ll keep it simple and pay homage to Halloween. JaMarcus Russell – Trick If this was supposed to be his make or break year, it’s safe to say so far he’s broken the seal on that bust label. Mario Henderson – Treat   Super Mario is becoming everything Robert Gallery was supposed to be. So much so that Drew Rosenhaus has taken notice. Darren McFadden – Trick He couldn’t stay healthy in college. He can’t stay healthy in the pros. [...]

Will the real JaMarcus Russell show up in San Diego?

AUTHOR: | IN: Commentary, Raiders | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Is he a bust? Is he a prodigy? Is he uncaring? Is he even-keeled? Is he a follower? Is he a leader? With each passing week, we get more questions than answers about JaMarcus Russell. His performance thus far in ’09 has given his stock a strong endorsement to sell. However, his coaches and teammates still seem to be buying in. So, who is the real JaMarcus Russell? If we’re to believe he is the lazy, unmotivated and overpaid anchor that is weighing down the franchise, then why has his coach stuck behind him this long? If he’s the guy [...]

Charger week just ain’t what it used to be

AUTHOR: | IN: Commentary, Raiders | COMMENTS: None Yet

It might come as a shock to some, but there was once a point in time when the Raiders and Chargers actually had a rivalry. Sure, the Silver and Black beat the Bolts more often than not, but that didn’t stop both fan bases from exchanging verbal jabs throughout the week leading up to the game. To this day, Jim Rome still references those two weeks out of the year when his talk show was high jacked by Raider Nation and Bandwagon Bolties who ran more smack than the host himself. These days the trash talk is minimal. Not that [...]

Raiders get run into the ground by Jets

AUTHOR: | IN: Raiders, Recaps | COMMENTS: None Yet

A blind man could have seen what was coming on Sunday. There were no secrets. The world knew the Jets were going to take the pressure off struggling rookie Mark Sanchez by giving Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Shonn Greene the rock over and over again. Surprise! The Raiders couldn’t stop the most basic of running plays and lost 38-0 to the visiting Jets. There was no game plan, no adjustments were made and no answer was found for a ground game that punished a sleep walking defense. Not that it mattered, but Washington broke his leg in the first [...]

Tom Cable seeks another no frills win over Jets

AUTHOR: | IN: Preview, Raiders | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Tom Cable is a no frills kind of guy who coaches a no frills kind of football team. His Oakland Raiders aren’t going to sell many tickets on the strength of their highlight reels, but his team sure can fill a lot more seats if they can notch another win at home. On Sunday, the New York Jets visit the Black Hole to renew a storied rivalry. In the last installment, the Raiders yielded 159-yards on the ground to Thomas Jones. However, the Silver and Black harassed Brett Favre all day long forcing the NFL’s most infamous senior citizen to [...]

Only Goodell can judge Cable now

AUTHOR: | IN: Raiders | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Citing a lack of evidence and inconsistencies in the story told by accuser Randy Hanson, the Napa District Attorney has decided not to pursue a case against Tom Cable. Now, the non-distracted Raiders can get back to their business at hand. The announcement made on Thursday afternoon brings the two month media saga to a close. While Cable is free from the long arm of the law, he’s not yet out of the reach of Roger Goodell. The NFL has yet to make an official decision as to whether or not Cable should be punished for his non-actions. One must [...]

Richard Seymour calls his shot: “The Raiders will be in the playoffs in 2009.”

AUTHOR: | IN: Raiders | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

When Tom Cable was named head coach of the Oakland Raiders back in February, he boldly proclaimed that the “Raiders were going to the playoffs.” To the surprise of none, his comments were brushed aside as mere pillow talk to appease one Al Davis. After an assault investigation, a 1-4 record to begin the season and staying the course with a quarterback whose horrible completion percentage was bested only by his QB rating, Cable’s words seemed more ignorant that arrogant. Then, John Marshall happened. Marshall’s masterful scheme that clipped the Eagles’ wings has injected new life into the Raider locker [...]

Heyward-Bey vs. Crabtree: Round 3

AUTHOR: | IN: Raiders, Recaps | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

When Al Davis chose speed over ego at the 2009 NFL Draft, a rivalry was born. Darrius Heyward-Bey became a Raider and just three picks later Michael Crabtree became a 49er. Two fan bases who love to run smack on one another had a new talking point.  Two men who might not even know each other were suddenly pitted against one another. DHB’s selection was the flash point of the draft. Every talking head and pseudo draftnik took turns bashing the pick like a piñata filled with draft busts. On the flip side, when the 9ers grabbed Crabtree, the pick [...]
