Tom Cable was able to avoid the Napa District Attorney but he can’t outrun his past. The current head coach of the Oakland Raiders weathered one storm only to discover that another one was brewing off the coast.
With Cable in their sights, ESPN squeezed the trigger and assassinated his character.
Now, the Oakland Raiders are launching a “serious investigation” of their own to get to the bottom of the allegations of violence levied against Cable.
Don’t confuse the Raiders’ response to the ESPN report as a corroboration of their findings. Consider this damage control. The Raiders aren’t exactly ecstatic over the way the Mickey Mouse Sports Empire has covered the Silver and Black over the years.
With the NFL watching closely and ESPN even closer, Cable is under the most powerful microscope of all – Al Davis. If Mr. Davis cited “cause” to justify his firing of Lane Kiffin, then all he’ll need to do is cite ESPN to justify showing Cable the door. Of course, he could just site the performance of Cable’s offense as well, but that would just be too easy.
There is yet another dark cloud hovering over the once proud franchise in Oakland. Though this cloud might have been pushed into town by the evil finger of Disney, it does not preclude it from raining just as hard on the man it follows. Tom Cable’s time in the Raider fold has been spent in constant turmoil. Some of which was out of his control. Recently, it has been due to his misgivings. While the latest weather anomaly might have been man made, it stands to reason that he was in fact the man who helped to blow the winds of discontent.
