After spending roughly one week on the Al Davis payroll, Clancy Pendergast has done an about-face and accepted the recently vacated defensive coordinator position at Cal Berkeley. Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post cites a league source in reporting the story.
For Clancy, this marks his fourth job in less than two years and his second in the Bay Area alone in one week’s time.
While the cynics will cite Clancy’s assessment of the state of the Oakland Raiders for his quick departure, I’d like to offer a different theory. To me, this reeks of Al Davis and his desire to stick it to Lane Kiffin at USC. Think about it…
With Al’s blessing, Clancy takes the job at Cal under the mandate that he’ll dial up a corner blitz and instruct his DB to go low on Matt Barkley.
What? Too far fetched?
Ok, so maybe the dude decided that he’d rather be a coordinator in the Pac-10 than a flunkie in the NFL. Just don’t be surprised when Kiffin is relegated to playing a walk-on at QB when the Bears visit the L.A. Coliseum on October 16th.
