Now that the dust has settled on the preseason, it’s time to get down to the business at hand. Namely, it’s time to take a wild stab and predicting what the roster will look like come Saturday when the NFL mandated roster trim will be completed.
Last year it was the release of Jeff Garcia that was the shock of the Raiders’ final cut down. Well…shocking to some, not to this blogger. This year, there are position battles everywhere and no roster spot is safe. As always, injuries will factor in on the decisions Tom Cable and company are pitted with but in the end, the best 53 will be wearing Silver and Black for 2010.
Here’s my breakdown.
QB (3) – Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski, Kyle Boller – Charlie Frye’s loss is Boller’s gain.
Cut: Colt Brennan
RB (5) – Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Marcel Reece, Rock Cartwright, Michael Bennett – Bennett gets a job due to injury concerns in the backfield.
Cut: Luke Lawton, Manase Tonga
WR (6) – Chaz Schilens, Darrius Heyard-Bey, Louis Murphy, Jacoby Ford, Yamon Figurs, Johnnie Lee Higgins – JLH benefits from the injury woes of Schilens.
Cut: Nick Miller, Todd Watkins, Shaun Bodiford
TE (3) – Zach Miller, Brandon Myers, John Owens – Owens got the nod once the Raiders released Tony Stewart and Eric Butler earlier in the week.
OL (9) – Mario Henderson, Robert Gallery, Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle, Langston Walker, Jared Veldheer, Bruce Campbell, Erik Pears
Cut: Daniel Loper, Alex Parsons, Brandon Rodd, Khalif Barnes, Chris Morris – Veldheer’s transition to center and Campbell playing guard made Morris the odd man out on the O-line.
DL (8) – Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly, Matt Shaughnessy, Lamarr Houston, Desmond Bryant, Jay Richardson, William Joseph, John Henderson
Cut: Chris Cooper, Greyson Gunheim, Kellen Heard, Alex Daniels – Daniels was lost in the mix between being switched to full back and then back to D-line.
LB (7) – Rolando McClain, Trevor Scott, Kamerion Wimbley, Ricky Brown, Travis Goethel, Sam Williams, Thomas Howard – Could be on borrowed time as his role is limited to passing downs and special teams with Wimbley starting.
Cut: Quinton Groves, David Nixon, Slade Norris
DB (9) – Nnamdi Asomugha, Stanford Routt, Chris Johnson, Tyvon Branch, Michael Huff, Mike Mitchell, Jeremy Ware, Walter McFadden, Stevie Brown
Cut: Jerome Boyd, Joe Porter, Joey Thomas, Hiram Eugene – Hiram has made the most of his opportunities but his days as a starting safety in the NFL are over…for now.
Special Teams (3) – Sebastian Janikowski, Shane Lechler, Jon Condo
Cut: Swayze Waters – Mission Impossible: Unseating the highest paid kicker in NFL History.
