Needing to make a roster move due to injury concerns, the Oakland Raiders signed linebacker Bruce Davis who was on the practice squad just across the Bay with the San Francisco 49ers. Since Davis was on the practice squad in The City he will automatically be added to the active roster in Oakland.
With a laundry list of players all nursing hamstring injuries, the Raiders were hit hard in the linebacking core. Injuries to both Quentin Groves and Thomas Howard not to mention Ricky Brown, who was inactive last week against Houston with a hamstring injury, has left Oakland in need of fresh legs.
Davis last suited up as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers in ’08 and has since spent brief stints on the practice squad for New England, Denver and most recently San Francisco. His father, Bruce Davis (Sr.) spent the better part of a decade playing for the Raiders in both Oakland and Los Angeles.
To make room for Davis, a defensive end at UCLA converted to linebacker in the pros, the Raiders parted ways with defensive tackle Jay Alford and also gave cornerback Joey Thomas his walking papers as well.
There is some speculation that the Raiders could also be in the market for a new running back just to fill out the depth chart in case both Darren McFadden and Michael Bennett are unable to go this Sunday. Both are dealing with sore hamstrings which seem to be an epidemic in the Raider locker room these days.
