Raiders Reverse the Chargers Curse

It took 7 seven years, 14 contests, 2 blocked punts, 3 forced fumbles, 2 quarterbacks and one 64-yard fumble return for the Raiders to finally defeat the San Diego Chargers. Take that Tuck Rule!

That sound you hear is the collective sigh of relief from Raider Nation.

Tom Cable has always been a throwback coach. On Sunday he guided his Raiders to a throwback win.

NFL Films will edit a clever reel detailing the thrilling 35-27 win by the Silver and Black. Raider Nation will forever remember a gutsy performance by their favorite team. The team itself finally got its date with Lady Momentum and this time she didn’t stand them up.

Not always pretty. Certainly a frustrating experience for those of us that have suffered through this tough stretch, this game made for anything but a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Never mind all the plotlines that have emerged during the course of one game of football. Just think of all the Advil Coach Cable will be popping in the coming weeks as he deals with the questions about Bruce Gradkowski and Darren McFadden after terrific relief efforts by Jason Campbell and Michael Bush. For this very moment in time, Tom Cable has authored his signature moment as head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

What the world witnessed was as thorough a team effort as you’ll ever see in professional football. The special teams, offense and defense each took turns carrying the team in a roller coaster ride well worth the price of admission.

There are still many phases of the game that need to be addressed. Cable’s Raiders are still racking up penalties faster than Lindsay Lohan collects DUIs. The run defense improved while the secondary struggled to contain the Chargers. The offense again seems to go with the flow of whichever QB has the hot hand.

Still this team found a way to make plays time and time again.

With the Kansas City Chiefs falling from the ranks of the unbeaten, the AFC West is officially wide open once again.

Get your popcorn ready.

If Coach Cable’s post game quote becomes the team mantra then what happened Sunday could be much more than a nice moment. This could be the moment.

“It was a great, great team effort, a tremendous win for us. It’s good to stop the streak. But as I said to them, let’s not make this a 24-hour feel-good party. Let’s make this who we are becoming.”

No matter the circumstances, there is only one mantra that matters in Raiders football.

Just Win Baby!

Now, bring on the 9ers!
