There are several things that Al Davis needs to address so the Raiders may have a successful 2011 season. Like I said in my last blog, we need a veteran wide receiver present on the practice field. There are many wide receivers that are free agent this season and may help our young receiving corps.
Should we take a flyer on Carson Palmer? Palmer has a good arm but two flat tires. As we all know, a quarterbacks for the Oakland Raiders needs to have wheels. I’ve thought about our quarterback situation many times and Jason Campbell is doing a great job. He has made great strides in our offense and will continue under Hue Jackson tutelage. Is it a coincidence that Campbell is having a great year? Hue Jackson Coached Joe Flacco in Baltimore and as we’ve all seen, Joe Flacco is one of the great young quarterback talents in this NFL. Is Campbell the answer? I think it this point he is. Is he Jim Plunkett? Is he the greatest quarterback in NFL? Far from it. Campbell is a good solid quarterback and really, that is all we need at this point.
Defense! We need to stop the run. We need to, either through free agency, or the draft pick up key players to stop the run. What’s the old adage, “Defense wins championships”! What do the four teams in this weekend championships have in common? They all have outstanding defenses. I would implore (more like beg) the Raiders to address that in the off-season. I would like to see the Raider’s main focus be on defense. Our offense this year looked fantastic (ranked 10th in the NFL). But, defense wins championships! I would even be happy with a Trent Dilfer style anemic offense because I know the defense is going to get us to the next level.
We definitely need to re-sign Nnamdi Asomuga as soon as possible. He may be the key to a 2011 championship. Re-signing Richard Seymour, Michael Bush, Zach Miller and the other 50 key free agents should be a priority this off season. Most were an intricate part of our team and help the Raider Nation return to excellence this season.
