Though he has yet to be named head coach all signs would indicate Hue Jackson is days away from becoming the next ex-coach of the Oakland Raiders. The biggest clue of all is that Al Davis is beginning his assistant coaching search. While it might be Jackson making the calls, it is Davis who ultimately hires the staff. Today, the Chronicle reports that former Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is rumored to be headed back to the East Bay to replace John Marshall. Hopefully the second time will be a charm for Raider great Tim Brown. Yesterday the 17 finalists for 2011 Hall of Fame enshrinement were announced with Brown among them for the second year in a row. We knew this day was coming. Two years ago Al Davis inked Nnamdi Asomugha to a complex deal that was the largest in league history for a DB. Seeking to avoid the franchise tag, Asomugha’s contract called for him to be paid on par with the NFL’s top quarterbacks but also had a specific stipulation that would void the three year agreement after two seasons. Unless he has designs on starting his head coaching career at the bottom rung – Carolina or Denver – then Hue Jackson is set to assume the throne in Oakland. There will be one less Raider in Hawaii. Richard Seymour will be unable to participate in the Pro Bowl due to the nagging hamstring injury that kept him out of action at the end of the season. While Tommy Kelly is an alternate he will not be taking his teammate’s place on the roster. Instead it’s Kyle Williams of Buffalo that will replace Seymour. 8 and 8 never looked so great! Upon returning back to work on Monday, all of the Raider haters had nothing to say. All the Charger, Chief, and Bronco fans that usually run their mouths relentlessly were stupified. I walked the halls at work and I said to all of my co-workers who follow an NFL team “Raaaaaaaiderssss”. I didn’t hear the normal, “You guys suck” or “Wait till next week”. Nothing! The Raiders had their finest season in 8 years because of the young talent on the team, and coach Tom Cable. The basis for this change was a “can do” belief that Tom Cable had installed. Cable is no longer under contract with the Raiders after this season and has since been released. Cable has done something that the other 20 coaches you fired since 2002 have not done Al. WIN! This is what Al Davis has been reduced to. His impatient nature has certainly got the best of him in recent years. Who can forget the ridiculous amount of money he committed to the worst free agency class ever in ’08? But by firing Tom Cable, Davis has broken new ground. The iconic owner’s ego has grown so large that he is now unable to see where his franchise stands in the football universe.
