Add Samson Satele to the slowly growing list of Raiders that were tendered RFA contracts last week. No word on what kind of tender the Raiders placed on their starting center but most see it as an insurance policy.
Being the only center currently on the roster makes retaining Satele’s services a must. Though he has run hot and cold in his two years in the East Bay, Satele got into a nice grove late in the season. Still, it is hard to ignore the fact that he lost his starting job to a rookie who was drafted as a left tackle.
Luckily for the Raiders Jared Veldheer proved to be a much better tackle than center.
After Veldheer was returned to his natural position, Satele slid back into the middle of the line where he started for the rest of the season. In each of Samson’s two years he’s had to battle with others to earn the starting job.
Most predict the Raiders will draft a center to either develop or compete immediately with Satele.
In addition to Satele’s tender, long snapper extraordinaire Jon Condo was tendered a contract as well. It marks the second straight year the full-time specialist was given a tender.
Meanwhile Bruce Gradkowski has stated he didn’t receive a tender of any kind. His Raider days are more than likely over but that was expected when Al Davis dealt for Jason Campbell. Without Tom Cable in his corner Gradkowski has few backers in the Oakland organization.
