Preseason power rankings are the male nipples of the sports world. They’re pretty much useless. Keep that in mind when you see ESPN’s first pass at ranking the NFL.
The usual suspects round out the top 10 with the Chargers in customary position to be another Vegas windfall. However you’ll have scroll all the way down past the likes of the Texans, Lions, Seahawks, Titans and Cardinals to find the Raiders.
Again, these rankings mean nothing. Just look at the Vikings whom you’ll find two spots below the Raiders as proof of that. Before the start of last season Minnesota was a Super Bowl contender. One Favre too far and they’re propping up the power rankings.
Oakland does boast of one of the more difficult schedules in the league (at least at this point in time) so it stands to reason that building on last season’s improvement will be a real challenge. Still it seems very lazy to list the Chargers ahead of both Kansas City and Oakland after the way the AFC West shaped up last time around.
But that’s why they play the game. Not too many non-cheese heads had the Packers winning it all before last season began. Come to think of it not many cheese heads had the Pack even making the playoffs with a month to go in the regular season.
Again, I’ll refer to back to the opening line of this post.
