53 Men that Will be Raiders: Predicting the Final Cut

The Raiders and Seahawks closed down the most unique preseason we’ve seen in years. We’re still waiting for the first win of the Hue Jackson era as Oakland folded in Seattle, losing 20-3 and going 0-for-the preseason.

This is the last off-season of labor strife for at least a decade. Despite the lockout ending before too much was lost there were plenty of casualties of the subtle kind.

For some straight cash was lost, homie. Vets that sought long term deals had to settle for one-year auditions.

For others, roles went by the wayside no thanks to the loss of OTAs, time with team trainers and just plain poor showings in the four weeks of camp.

For many, the chance at a job in football ends tonight as the final cut downs are due by 3pm Pacific Standard.

Here is one blogger’s picks for the 53 men lucky enough to earn a living wearing silver and black in 2011.

QB (3) – Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller, Trent Edwars

Notes: Terrelle Pryor will sit for five weeks and then could take another QB off the roster after the way Edwards looked in the preseason. Chances are the Raiders will have 4 official QBs with one that could see snaps in another role…we’ll see…

RB (4) – Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Taiwan Jones, Rock Cartwright

Notes: Camp might be over but the battle for snaps is just beginning. Jones only made cameos in preseason but showed enough to merit touches. Run DMC’s health is always in question and Bush is on a one-year deal. Don’t blink. You might miss the best running back trio in the NFL. No joke!

FB (1) – Marcel Reece

Notes: Reece is one of the most unique weapons in football. How Coach Jackson will expand his role remains to be seen. One thing is for sure – Reece is the most deadly fullback in the open field you’ll ever see.

WR (6) – Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford, Louis Murphy, Chaz Schilens, Denarius Moore, Derek Hagan

Notes: Give Hagan props. Dude was just supposed to be a camp body. He took the opportunity given and got himself and job and a role. Hagan will be key in those third down situations where there is an in-between distance to the sticks. Sorry, Nick Miller. Much love from Raider Nation but Hagan was just hungrier.

TE (3) – Kevin Boss, Brandon Myers, David Ausberry

Notes: Boss’ knee will be something to keep and eye on. Ausberry gets the nod over Richard Gordon based on potential but Gordon is a better blocker by far.

OL (9) – Jared Veldheer, Stefen Wisniewski, Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle, Kahlif Barnes, Joe Barksdale, Daniel Loper, Bruce Campbell, Stephon Heyer

Notes: Barnes is closer to being cut by the day. He gets both a job and a starting gig on experience alone. Heyer and Barksdale should be ready to play. I’m thinking we’ll see a lot of different looks on the right side of the line.

DL (8) – Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly, Matt Shaughnessy, Lamarr Houston, John Henderson, Trevor Scott, Jarvis Moss, Desmond Bryant

Notes: Scott looks good coming off knee surgery. He brings more versatility to a line that didn’t look great in the preseason. Much is expected of this unit.

LB (6) – Kamerion Wimbley, Rolando McClain, Quentin Groves, Sam Williams, Darryl Blackstock, Bruce Davis

Notes: The Raiders put the ‘weak’ in weak-side. Groves is still not the answer. Williams is a special teams guy only. Not kidding here – Davis might be the best bet to take reps from Groves.

DB (10) – Stanford Routt, Chris Johnson, Tyvon Branch, Michael Huff, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Mike Mitchell, Lito Sheppard, Chimdi Chekwa, Stevie Brown, Jerome Boyd

Notes:  Cutting Walter McFadden is the one pick I made with my heart instead of head. One of these guys could be gone once Pryor is made active. Most likely it’s between Brown and Boyd. Sterling Moore will get a spot on the practice squad if no other team claims him.

K – Sebastian Janikowski

P – Shane Lechler

LS – Jon Condo

Boy keeping Chaz over Miller really hurts. I’ll really miss seeing Miller on the inactive list, or having no catches.

I’m really disappointed in our defense. Is it being forced to play a certain system to please Al Davis, or are the players not very good ?

I’m really impressed with Jason Campbell. He played solid and he has some weapons.
