Today Hue Jackson stated that of the current Raiders that are injured some are “a long ways away” from returning to action. Maybe I’m reading too much into the news of Trevor Pryce paying a visit to the East Bay but it would appear Matt Shaughnessy is among those that need more time to recover.
After missing last Sunday’s contest against the Pats due to a shoulder injury the hope was Shaughnessy would be ready for the Houston Texans and their top notch ground attack. Instead the emerging defensive end hasn’t practiced all week and is undoubtedly out of action for this weekend.
That the Raiders would even consider rolling the dice on the 36-year-old Pryce says a lot.
It speaks volumes as to how dire and desperate they are to do anything to improve the run defense. It also quietly whispers of how far away Shaughnessy is from playing again.
There is no timetable given for Shaughnessy as the team has yet to divulge any specifics of the state of his shoulder. Still the news of Price getting checked out doesn’t bode well in any way.
In order for the Raiders to make a serious playoff push they’ve got to do something about their current defensive standing. Even with a healthy Shaughnessy the defensive line was not playing up to the standards expected. Its doubtful Pryce would make any significant difference. But at this point Coach Jackson is already looking for anything that may help.
