Hue Jackson might not have gone to medical school but he’s certainly getting an education in human anatomy this season. The Oakland Raiders have had to deal with mounting injuries this year. It began in training camp and has only continued through the regular season.
No doubt all those walking wounded have contributed to the decline in Oakland’s playoff chances. Mind you that does not excuse the lack of effort the last two weeks. Still it is a reality that losing so many key contributors never helps any team’s chances. Except, of course, the 2010 Green Bay Packers. But I digress…
Today Jackson again played the role of Head Coach MD by explaining that Darren McFadden won’t require surgery for that nagging foot issue. As Steve Corkran points out, McFadden is suffering from a similar injury endured by Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans. In case you haven’t taken notice Schaub was placed on IR ending his season.
As of now McFadden is still on the active roster even though he’s been as inactive as JaMarcus Russell for the last six weeks. Ok, that was unfair. McFadden did do some jogging last week actually.
Either way this weekly routine is growing old for everyone. McFadden is certainly frustrated as is Jackson. Carson Palmer hasn’t even taken a snap with McFadden lining up behind him. Although I doubt that would make much difference in Palmer’s persistence to set turnover records.
While I wasn’t present for Jackson’s presser I can read the frustration as he explains the McFadden injury known as a Lisfranc sprain.
“I’ve been told that he has a midfoot sprain, which is just like a Lisfranc sprain, however you see that. It’s the same. It’s really one and the same. And I know one can require – both can require surgery. Both can require you to be out several, several weeks. So, they’re all in that same family.
“I just think how you describe it, based on one when you say Lisfranc, really means surgical. You got to go in and fix it right away in order to get it to heal properly. That’s why when people hear that term, everybody goes, ‘Oh, my gosh, that’s what he has.’ No, he does not need surgery. That much I do know. You guys can write that. Darren McFadden does not need surgery.”
