Al Saunders To Remain With Raiders

Keeping Saunders in any capacity is the right thing to do. (Photo: Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE)

He might not be coordinating Dennis Allen’s offense but Al Saunders will stay in the East Bay. Jason LaCanfora reports that Saunders’ contract has been extended and he’ll remain a part of the Raiders’ staff serving as a senior assistant.

Now just exactly what Saunders’ duties will be remains to be seen.  As we already know Greg Knapp has been brought back to coordinate the offense.  Perhaps Saunders will serve as a game day consultant or could just give Knapp some advice during the practice week.

No matter Saunders involvement this is a good move by Allen and the Raiders. Oakland’s offense was not the problem last season. If anything injuries were the biggest issue with the offense but that can hardly be helped. Saunders’ play calling and his use of the talent on the roster was the best we’ve seen in Oakland in sometime.

Keeping Saunders was the right thing to do.

All of these sweeping changes could ultimately be just what this franchise needs but given all the continuous changes in Oakland in recent years any continuity is welcomed. Especially when that continuity involves keeping anyone that was a part of the solution.
