Dennis Allen has done it again. In his continuing efforts to fill out his coaching staff Allen has once again gone to the collegiate ranks to find a coach. This time he went back to his alma mater of Texas A&M to bring Terrell Williams on board as the Raiders defensive line coach.
Either Allen is looking to unearth new talent on his staff or he’s having trouble getting NFL vets to sign on with a rookie coach. That is not entirely unheard of, just as Greg Schiano in Tampa about that.
Whatever the case, Allen’s search for a defensive coordinator yielded nothing but dead ends so he eventually took a trip down to Palo Alto to hire Jason Tarver. In addition Allen has hired from the NCAA other assistants such as his quarterbacks coach, secondary assistant and tight ends assistant.
No matter their qualification, so long as they guys can coach up the team then Allen’s moves will be validated. Williams will be in charge of a unit that boasts of some top tier talent but was wildly inconsistent last season.
With all the changes going on in Oakland it is easy to forget that we’re looking at a coaching staff that doesn’t have a lot of NFL experience. Whether or not that is an issue in any way will be revealed in due time.
