Having never flashed all the skill that came with all his potential Chaz Schilens is poised to part ways with the Oakland Raiders. Of course if Al Davis were still around we’d likely have some news by now of a lucrative deal being placed in front of Schilens well above and beyond what other teams were willing to pay. But these days the Reggie McKenzie approach doesn’t allow for scholarships to be freely handed out.
With more than enough young talent to build on in Oakland’s receiving corps the Raiders are more than willing to let Schilens walk away. Thus far there have been reports of the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and even Bay Area rivals the San Francisco 49ers showing interest in Schilens. He’s apparently going to make a visit in Phoenix but no deal is imminent as of yet. A second tier receiver like Schilens will likely have to wait until all the big names in front of him are fed before he can sit at the free agency table.
Should Schilens reach his potential it won’t come as much of a surprise to Raider Nation. He’s long been an urban legend around football’s most loyal fan base. There were moments when he even did the impossible and helped make JaMarcus Russell look like and NFL QB. Injuries surely played a large role in Schilens’ lack of production over the years. But even after being healthy for the balance of 2011 Chaz was still unable to fight his way to an expanded role.
As it stands the Raiders have already committed top dollar to Darrius Heyward-Bey while still having breakout talents like Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore under contract for mere pennies when compared to what kind of money it would cost to pay for a now NFL vet like Schilens. So aside from his failure to fully deliver on his potential he’s also a victim of the current cap strapped Raiders and the new financial approach being taken.
