With Kamerion Wimbley officially off the payroll, Reggie McKenzie can start spending money on players. Yesterday the Raiders hosted free agent cornerback Ron Bartell. The former St. Louis Ram’s time in Oakland must have gone well because he’s now said to be in contract talks with the Raiders as reported by Vittorio Tafur.
Bartell didn’t even make it through the first game of last season, suffering a neck injury that shut him down for the year. Apparently healthy enough to get on the field again the Raiders are willing to offer him a deal. Of course beggars can’t be choosey.
Oakland doesn’t have enough cash on hand to pursue bigger names on the open market. Thus bargains like Bartell are their best bet. It’s not like they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel though. Bartell was a second round pick that was big part of the St. Louis secondary for the past seven years. He’s got blazing speed, ideal size and is capable vet. All of those traits are badly needed in Oakland right about now.
There are no details on the nature of the contract as of yet. I’m guessing it won’t be anywhere near the $30-million deal that Stanford Routt agreed upon last year at this time.
