From one side of the Bay to the other. Shawntae Spencer, a career 49er, has joined the ranks of the silver and black. ESPN reports that the Raiders have signed the veteran corner just days after he paid Reggie McKenzie a visit. As of yet there is no official confirmation from the Oakland organization.
The Raiders were already in the market for cornerbacks even before today’s big news of Peyton Manning coming to the division. Still, that just ups the urgency ante even more.
For Spencer the move offers him the opportunity to become a starter once again. The former second round pick saw his role greatly reduced once Jim Harbaugh rolled into town. Given Oakland’s current situation there is no reason why Spencer won’t have every opportunity to be a starting corner once again. Oakland defensive coordinator Jason Tarver is very familiar with Spencer having been on San Francisco’s coaching staff during the years in which Shawntae was a starter.
Tracy Porter is another name on Oakland’s shopping list. He’s said to have a visit arranged with the Raiders this week.
UPDATE: The Raiders have confirmed the signing of Spencer.
