Reggie McKenzie’s bargain shopping continues, this time he’s in the market for a strong side linebacker to replace Kamerion Wimbley. Jason La Canfora reports that Philip Wheeler is scheduled to make a visit with the Raiders having already made a stop in Miami.
Since being picked in the third round of the ’08 draft by the Indianapolis Colts Wheeler has made 24 career starts 11 of which came last season. Of course it is hard to ignore how horrible the Colts defense was last season, not that Oakland’s was anything to brag about.
At this point the Raiders are looking for experience at a discount while McKenzie continues the salary cleansing process. While Dennis Allen continues to sort out his defensive philosophy it is unclear exactly what type of linebackers the Raiders are considering. Wheeler isn’t the pass rushing specialist Wimbley was but he could be utilized as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.
It still remains possible that Wheeler could return to the Colts. He clearly isn’t a free agent in high demand but certainly will be able to find work.
