The power of Raider Nation is real. As if anyone needed further proof that there is only one true Nation in all of sports I offer you today’s signing of Philip Wheeler.
Just yesterday Wheeler Tweeted that he was on his way to visit Oakland. It didn’t take long for Raider Nation to encourage the free agent linebacker and now former Indianapolis Colt to go ahead and start looking for a place to live in the Bay. So overwhelmed by the instant encouragement from football’s most faithful fan base, Wheeler decided wearing Silver and Black was the only way to spend Sunday’s next fall. He again Tweeted as much today.
Now I’m not so foolish to think it was Raider Nation alone that got Wheeler to commit to the franchise. Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen played a large role in that decision. Let’s also make it clear that while Wheeler is likely to start as the SAM linebacker he’s not by any means a top tier NFL talent. Not many teams gave him the opportunity he’s going to have in Oakland.
All that said everyone on this planet likes to feel wanted at their place of employment. Every year you hear the same things from players that are new to the Oakland organization. Playing in front of Raider Nation is unlike anything else in football. No other fan base gets behind its team like football’s most infamous fans. Wheeler got his first taste of it online. Just wait until he suits up for the first time.
