Reggie McKenzie is trying to kill two birds with one stone. According to a Tweet from Steve Corkran a long-term contract for Tyvon Branch is said to be “in the works”. The move would not only secure Branch as a Raider for years to come but would also help to free some up some much needed cap space.
Once the Raiders placed the franchise tag on Tyvon they were on the hook for a good $6-million. With a new deal in place McKenzie and his staff can get creative on when Branch is paid thus allowing for more money to be freed in order to address other needs.
This would be one of those rare win-win scenarios in the sports world. If it comes to be…
Nothing guarantees Branch will come to terms with the Raiders. If it were Al Davis then there’d be little doubt that Tyvon would be in silver and black for the foreseeable future. Al loved to show his guys the money. McKenzie has proven to be a negotiator of a different breed.
Of course since the Raiders already put a $6-million value on Branch then they’ve set the market for his value as well. So unless some insulting lowball offer is presented then I’d expect Branch and the Raiders to reach a deal before camp opens.
