Raiders Draft Preview: Derrick Coleman

As impossible as it was to replace Nnamdi Asomugha it will be equally as improbable to do the same for the loss of Michael Bush. Reggie McKenzie has proven himself to be proactive if nothing else. He’s not willing to sit back and wait for the ship to come in.

It took McKenzie all of one week after losing Bush to go out and trade for Mike Goodson. Now nobody expects Goodson to be able to step in a run for almost 1,000 yards should Darren McFadden do his usual injury disappearing act. Nothing guarantees the Raiders will be able to find a running back in the draft that can produce at the Michael Bush level.

The reality is there is no one player out there that can replace that production. It will be a total team effort. Taiwan Jones can step in as a change of pace back. Goodson is skilled enough that he can play in almost any type of game situation. What remains to be seen is who will get those tough yards that that Bush used to churn out to keep those chains moving.

UCLA runner Derrick Coleman isn’t a name burning up the NFL draft talk these days. Reality is he might not even be drafted. However that doesn’t mean he can’t make an NFL roster and contribute. The Raiders are one of many NFL teams that have lined up a visit with the Fullerton native. For all we know Coleman could be the Raiders short yardage specialist in 2012.

Derrick Coleman, FB-RB, UCLA

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 230lbs

Strengths: An amazing athlete that put on an impressive workout at UCLA’s pro day. Has been clocked at 4.46 in the 40, popped a 36” vertical and put up 20 reps of 225. Explosive in the open field yet capable of gaining tough yards as well. A remarkable story as Coleman is deaf and must play with hearing aids. A real nose for the end zone scoring 11 TDs as a Senior despite splitting carries with Jonathan Franklin.

Weaknesses: Will have to improve blocking ability to be a full-time fullback in NFL. At this point would only be a specialist playing on special teams and certain offensive packages. Has had some ball security issues during collegiate career. Hearing could be a red flag for some teams.
