Raiders Roster Review: Travis Goethel

For all we know Travis Goethel could be a draft steal as a 6th round pick back in 2010. It seems like he’s always on the verge of grabbing a starting job at anyone of the three linebacker positions the Raiders employ until injury occurs.

As a rookie Goethel was on the verge of securing the weak-side job until a back injury limited him to seeing action in just 8 games. So with a fresh start in his second season Goethel was again pushing everyone that played linebacker for the silver and black until a knee injury occurred during training camp.

Now he’s back for his third go-round and if he can stay healthy perhaps we’ll see what Goethel can do. During his limited time on the field as a rookie the former Arizona State Sun Devil showed the versatility that made him a value pick at 190th overall. He also showed that he’s got room for improvement as Goethel looked lost at times and out of position often.

Still, given the uncertain status of Rolando McClain and the lack of funds available to bring in other options Goethel could get a long look as a MIKE backer or at any of the other roles now available in Dennis Allen’s evolving scheme…that’s if he can stay healthy.

This is Goethel’s 3rd year in the league and his best chance to see if he has what it takes to make it in the NFL.  McClain has pretty much handed his starting job over to Goethel.  But after two years of injuries, staying healthy is everything this year for this LB.  No more excuses, this young man has to show that he can stay healthy and contribute to this team.  LB has been one of the weakest position on the Raiders.  Young talent, step forward.
