Just because you’ve made the final cut doesn’t mean you’ve made the team. Just ask Chimdi Chekwa about that or any of the other numerous players around the NFL that were released one day after making the 53-man roster.
Once the final cut happens the final push to shore up rosters gets underway. Yesterday the Raiders hopefully addressed some areas of concern as far as depth goes by claiming CB Phillip Adams, OT Willie Smith and LB Keenan Clayton after they were cut from their respective teams.
Of course in order for the Raiders to add three players they’ve got to subtract three as well. Chekwa being one of the casualties was joined by Bryan McCann and Jamie Cumbie. Chekwa lasted just one season in Oakland after being a 4th round pick in 2011. McCann seemed to have secured a roster spot as a return man until Coye Francise was signed. Cumbie become a bit of a fan favorite thanks to his inspired preseason play and his rough and tumble route taken to the NFL.
In addition to the roster comings and goings the Raiders also settled their practice squad. Rookie 7thround pick Nathan Stupar, wide receivers Brandon Carswell and Travionte Session and linebacker Kaelin Burnett all cleared waivers and will available to Oakland for activation from the practice squad should their services be required on the active roster.
