Richard Seymour is the eternal optimist of the Oakland Raiders. Too bad optimism doesn’t count in the win column.
When Seymour first became a Raider he made a bold playoff prediction right after Oakland suffered a horrendous loss. We know how things went with that guarantee. So instead of making bold claims this time around Seymour is just making bold statements about the horrible defense he’s supposed to be leading.
“We’re so close on so many plays. It’s fixable. We’re headed in the right direction.”
Normally optimistic statements won’t fall into the bold category. However anyone who has watched Oakland’s keystone cops routines on Sundays would think Seymour is being a bit naïve in his assessment.
Whereas Seymour sees the glass as half full most of us are looking at a cracked glass leaking liquid faster than a BP oil spill. But what do we know? We’re on the outside looking in at this mess. Maybe Seymour sees something we mere football mortals do not.
Whatever it is he sees he needs to get more eyes fixed on the same thing. Currently we’re looking at the worst defense in the history of the franchise. That’s not even the bad news. The truly horrifying news is that things can get much worse.
So whatever it is that is giving Seymour his optimism needs to translate to the field soon. Luckily the Raiders have a bye week to regroup. If nothing has changed by the time the Raiders take the field in Atlanta then we’ll know Seymour’s talk is more misguided than it already appears. I’m all for keeping things positive but at some point you just have to face facts and come clean. Right about now Seymour may need a shower…just saying.
