After seeing his team destroyed by the Denver Broncos rookie head coach Dennis Allen shared a postgame laugh with John Fox. Whatever their conversation was about not too many members of Raider Nation enjoyed seeing the cameras capture anything that resembled joy after such a soul-sucking defeat.
After the Raiders concluded their final practice prior to entering the bye week Allen took some time to explain his postgame grin.
“Came to middle of the field, said, ‘Congratulations,’ and he said, ‘You’re doing a good job. But the question that he asked me was, ‘Did you make it out healthy?’ And with the health of our corners, with the health of our tackles, with the health of our wide receivers, I couldn’t help but get a chuckle out of it.”
Just so we’re clear, losing by 31 points is nothing to laugh at but injuries are. Is that Allen’s way of defending himself?
I know, I know. It was ironic laughter. Not comical laughter.
Like most of you I’ve seen and heard enough from this coaching staff. I like Allen and want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Fox is a former employer whom I’m sure Allen has nothing but respect for. I just wonder how Coach Allen would have responded to seeing one of his players conduct themselves in a similar manner.
I don’t mean to make anything out of this because honestly I had no reaction to it initially. However now that Allen is responding to questions about it I’m starting to wonder if this is just another rookie mistake by the first year head coach or if he’s just nervous having been caught in awkward situation.
No matter the case nothing is funny after a loss like that. Not ironic questions. Not Happy Gilmore. Not even Three Amigos. Nothing is funny. Hopefully Allen learns from another one of his gaffs and moves on. I respect his desire to calm any concerns but sometimes not making the mistake in the first place or just offering the simplest and shortest answer possible is best. Over-explaining things always makes a situation worse.
