Here at JBB we never claim to have the insider dish. Rumors float around all the time. Some are more truth than fiction. Others are more fiction than fiction…whatever that means.
What I’m getting at is the rumored talks between Oakland and Jon Gruden always seemed odd to me for a lot of reasons. The biggest hurdle standing in the path of the Chucky return being the timing of the whole story. It’s pretty sad to say the Raider brass was backdoor Grudening while Dennis Allen was dealing with a personal tragedy of the most personal kind.
That fact alone set off Raiders PR Director Zak Glibert. Taking great offense to the off base rumors were the Raiders that Gilbert unloaded on the rumor mongers with an e-mail blast sent to members of the media. The following comes courtesy of Jerry McDonald.
Members of the media: There are two people on this planet that have the ability to make talks happen between Jon Gruden and the Raiders, with regard to him allegedly taking over the football operations, and/or the position of head coach. Each of those individuals, owner Mark Davis and general manager Reggie McKenzie, wanted me to communicate that this rumor has no validity whatsoever. And for the record, I’m personally disgusted that Hub Arkush would spread such an untruth on the day our head coach, Dennis Allen, had to determine with his mom, his brother and sister, whether to take his dad off life support or wait and hope that he would regain consciousness. Dennis didn’t have an opportunity to say goodbye to his dad, but he did have an opportunity to take a phone call regarding Hub’s story.
There you have it. Understandably the Oakland management is frustrated with everything at the moment. This is another brick in the wall. That said unfounded rumors are unfair to all parties involved. However there is nothing worse than ugly rumors than become truths.
I never for a second thought the Raiders were talking to Gruden about a job that wasn’t available. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an unofficial coaching search underway. Again, we have no inside dirt here and where there is smoke there is usually fire. Of course in some instances that smoke is of the all sizzle no steak variety which means its just steam.
