There is no doubt what the point of emphasis is for Reggie McKenzie during the free agency period. He’s looking to overhaul the defense, specifically the linebacking corp. All but one of the players the Raiders have added to the roster thus far have been linebackers so seeing Kevin Burnett in Silver and Black can’t be too much of a surprise. There were rumors of the Raiders interest in Burnett and for good measure his brother Kaelin is already on the roster as well.
The Inglewood native and former Miami Dolphin arrives as a valued asset for Dennis Allen who is quietly reshaping the defensive scheme…3-4 anyone?
On the surface it would appear the Raiders and Dolphins swapped linebackers with Philip Wheeler and Burnett trading places. However the reality is the financials involved are what motivated both moves. Miami wanted to shed Burnett’s contract and the Raiders didn’t have the money to match Miami’s offer to Wheeler.
None the less what Oakland inherits is a versatile defender that has racked up 100+ tackles in each of the last two seasons. A former second round choice of the Dallas Cowboys coming out of Tennessee, Burnett brings veteran experience to a defense being rebuilt on the fly.
