Fan Corner: “Once A Raider” Connects Former Raiders to a New Generation Through Photo History

Fan Corner is an ongoing segment where Just Blog Baby highlights the special members of Raider Nation that make the Oakland Raiders so special as well as showcasing the opinions of our readers. For future Fan Corner feature suggestions email Chase Ruttig or tweet @JustBlogBaby.

On Sunday night a special fan of Just Blog Baby shot me an email about his story of collecting images of every player in Raiders history in a photo project titled “Once a Raider.” The website was a winner of the 2013 New Era Back to Football contest and is a one of a kind photo collection that is a must click for any Raiders fan.

Developed by New York Photographer Peter Joe DiPilato as a tribute to his childhood team the blog showcases photos of former Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders from the team’s inception in 1960. From Madden to Gruden, from Biletnikoff to Brown all of the Raiders greats, busts, coaches and iconic players that ever put on the Silver and Black can be found in their former glory.

The website has drawn the attention from celebs and former Raiders as Warren G, Natalie Coughlin and Aceyalone have all been visitors of the website. Former Raiders Phillip Buchanon, Langston Walker, Jeremy Ware, Andre Carter and Carl Weathers (who even submitted his own photo for publication) have also given Once A Raider some love on twitter.

Updated on a weekly basis in an attempt to have a photo of ever Raider to ever put on the Silver and Black, Once A Raider is a gripping glossary of Raiders legends that keeps you scrolling for days with memories coming back to you of the good old days of each former player. Of course, the images are accompanied by The Autumn Wind, written by Steve Sabol and narrated by the legendary voice of John Facenda.

This collection of photos kept me up all night as I am one of the biggest sports history nerds there is and if you love the Oakland Raiders, you need to pay homage to Peter Joe DiPilato’s hard work. Go ahead and look at his collection of photos, you won’t regret it.
