While there was some internet chatter amongst less reputably sourced reports floating around the internet this morning, Chargers running back Ryan Mathews apparently has not been arrested in involvement in a bar fight according to ProFootballTalk on Monday.
According to U-T San Diego, Mathews was not involved in an alleged bar fight on Sunday night and was not arrested by the San Diego Police Department as reported. Luckily the story that was picking up some small steam was not picked up by any major media or news outlets before it was confirmed as false.
The folks at PFT separately confirmed that the Chargers running back was not arrested by the SDPD, and there’s also no indication of an arrest of anyone named Ryan Mathews in San Diego County’s online jail record. Those two things automatically place this story into the false column as the San Diego Police Department is publicly claiming that Mathews was definitely not arrested as rumors claimed.
Here is the public statement from the SDPD’s Robin Rose on the reports of Mathews arrest:
“We can say that he was definitely not arrested by SDPD,” San Diego Police Department Sgt. Robin Rose told U-T San Diego, “but there might have been a separate arrest that lead to that [report]. . . . It was not Ryan Mathews.”
Rose did confirm that there was a fight outside a nightclub, and reported that someone not Mathews was arrested in the incident. However she did not release that persons name and this story likely will end as a lesson to all of those who follow the rumor mill that sometimes things are simply not true just because you read them.
