The Oakland Raiders didn’t need Matt Barkley

In the 1991 National Football League (NFL) Draft, the Los Angeles Raiders selected a quarterback out of the University of Southern California (USC).  Remember Raider Nation, the L.A. Raiders selected Todd Marinovich in the first round (24th overall).  We all know how well this pick panned out.  The funny thing is, the L.A. Raiders could have picked Brett Favre instead of Marinovich, but we weren’t that lucky.

There’s been some buzz floating around which indicated that the Oakland Raiders would have picked Matt Barkley (USC) in the 2013 NFL Draft if he had been available.  I’m here to say, “Thank the football gods that we didn’t pick him!”  I’m not taking anything away from Matt Barkley or from USC, but I don’t like the track record that USC has with its quarterbacks who have been drafted in the past.

Here is a list of the quarterbacks who have been drafted out of USC; Mark Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Sean Salisbury, Rodney Peete, Pat Haden, Matt Cassel, Bill Nelsen, Pete Beathard, Vince Evans, Paul McDonald, Todd Marinovich, Rob Johnson and John David Booty.  USC has a strong list of Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks, but the list of NFL winning quarterbacks isn’t as long.  In fact, most of these quarterbacks were and are better back-ups to starting quarterbacks.

The Philadelphia Eagles are definitely going through some changes this year with their new head coach.  Still, it’s Michael Vick’s position to lose.  With the right system built around him, Matt Barkley could become a good quarterback.  However, he will have to wait for at least one year, or he’ll have to wait until Michael Vick gets injured.

Personally, I like the fact that the Oakland Raiders picked Tyler Wilson, even if he did fall to us.  Wilson is hungry, and after the 2012 debacle at Arkansas, he has something to prove.  A quarterback with something to prove to the world usually becomes pretty darn good.  We are about 28 days away from the start of training camp.  In training camp, we will all see what direction the Oakland Raiders will be headed.  Until then, there is only speculation.
