With third string quarterback Matt Blanchard breaking his knuckle during their second preseason game, the Chicago Bears were forced to go out into the veteran’s market to find some depth at the quarterback position for their final two preseason games. Head coach Marc Trestman opted to go the veteran route, locking up former Bills starter Trent Edwards and Jordan Palmer over the weekend.

On Monday it was reported that Edwards and Palmer will play in the Bears trip to O.co on Friday and the entire game in their preseason finale as the Bears reported on their official website that Jay Cutler and Josh McCown will sit the fourth preseason game before the Bears open what they hope to be a season that sees a trup to the playoffs out of the NFC North.

Palmer signed on Saturday and got his first taste of NFL life with the Bengals when he was his brother’s third string quarterback before spending some time with the Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers. He worked out alongside Edwards and former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell before General Manager Phil Emry chose to go with the safer third string options in Edwards and Palmer.

With the two planning on getting second half playing time primarily in the fourth quarter on Friday and around one half each in the preseason finale the next two weeks will serve as a battle between the former starter in Edwards and Palmer for the final roster spot reserved for the third string QB.

Edwards is known best as a member of the Buffalo Bills, where he stared 34 games over parts of four seasons. His best year was 2008, when he threw for 2699 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Buffalo.

Palmer doesn’t have as long of a resume, but he has served as a clipboard holder before, completing 10 of 15 passes for the Bengals with two interceptions over parts of two NFL seasons with the team. Palmer also spent time with the Jaguars during the 2012 preseason.

Jordan will be a longshot to make the team behind Edwards, a former NFL starter with more visible talent, but it will be interesting to see how a Palmer will be received by the Black Hole come the second half on Friday. Based on the way things went down with the Carson Palmer Era, there might be a few boos raining down on Jordan.

As a Bears fan, I too hope for a TRUP to the playoffs. Whatever a TRUP is.
