Terrelle Pryor and Menelik Watson to start against Seattle Thursday, Matt Flynn out with tendinitis

Earlier Sunday afternoon it was reported that Terrelle Pryor was taking reps with the first team offense to start practice before the media viewing period came to a close, leading many to start preparing the Pryor over Matt Flynn discussions. Well Raider Nation did not have to wait long as the fan favorite Pryor will start in place of an injured Matt Flynn on Thursday according to Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com

Dennis Allen confirmed that Flynn will be rested with a sore arm that is reported as tendinitis, Bair tweeted as Raiders practice came to a close.

The move gives Pryor a chance to run with the first team for the first chance this preseason, a move that Dennis Allen already was going to likely be forced to make given Pryor’s outstanding third quarter at the O.co against the Bears. For Flynn, it is a similar situation to last year as the same arm issues that crept up last preseason when he lost his job to Russell Wilson has returned. It is now Pryor’s job to lose, something that seems unlikely given the flash he has shown for much of his preseason appearances.

Bair also reported after practice that tackle Menelik Watson will be starting on the left side in place of Alex Barron on Thursday.

Watson played primarily on the right side during his stay at Florida State, the raw talent is likely an improvement over an over the hill Barron that while improved against the Bears, is simply not going to cut it for the Raiders as they wait for Jared Veldheer’s return from injury and the partial IR. Watson’s ability to transition to playing at LT will be evaluated by Dennis Allen, Greg Olsen and Tony Sparano on Thursday and if he can perform, it is highly likely they roll the dice on Watson as their starter until Veldheer returns.

I really hope Watson does well. I can’t wait to see what he can bring to the table Thursday.

  • Shane Schilperoort

I hope Watson does well too, but I’m really looking forward to what Pryor can do. This is his time to shine, and this is his chance to take over as the starter. Most, if not all, of Raider Nation will be pulling for Pryor!

I believe Dennis Allen is throwing Pryor to the wolf’s, as Seattle defense is sick! I hope Pryor shows him up by performing like the starter we believe he can be! The Raiders need Watson to play like a true 2nd round draft pick. Time to step up & play ball gentlemen !

I do not think he is throwing him to the wolfs, he just wants to validate what he has. No better test for Pryor and Watson. If they just do OK they start week one but if they do not well at least he knows where they are development wise

That Seattle Defense is TOUGH, especially in their own house. I don’t expect Pryor to look all the great Thursday, but I have seen NOTHING from Flynn that makes me want to see him start over Pryor. TP just has that IT factor, and is one of those guys who you just love to watch run…just smooth as silk. I just hope the O-Line doesn’t get him killed up there in the NW….

There’s not a quarterback in the NFL that can be successful with this team. I really haven’t seen anything worse…
