Oakland Raiders: Players on the Bubble to Make the Roster

By 6:00 PM EST today, the Oakland Raiders roster must be trimmed to 75-players.  Currently, the Raiders have already released 12-players, and 3 more must go by the deadline this afternoon.  By Saturday, August 31st, at 6:00 PM EST, the Raiders roster must be trimmed to the 53-man roster.  So let’s take a look at the players who are on the bubble.

First of all, the Raiders have a ton of tight ends.  With David Ausberry injured, Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud have been battling it out for the number one position.  Rookie Mychal Rivera had a descent showing on Friday, August 23rd, and so did Nick Kasa.  The one tight end who is on the bubble to make the 75-man roster is Brian Leonhardt.  With Ausberry injured, I imagine the Raiders may keep at least four tight ends.  This would leave rookies Mychal Rivera and Nick Kasa on the bubble to make the 53-man roster.

Next, the Raiders are deep at the wide receiver position.  There are four wide receivers who I think are on the bubble, and they are Juron Criner, Andre Holmes, Conner Vernon, and Greg Jenkins.  Holmes is an interesting case, because he has shown that he can be a really good receiver.  He has really good size and hands, and he would contribute on special teams.  I think he’ll make at least the 75-man roster, and there’s a good chance he makes a play for the 53-man roster, even with his 4-game suspension.  The interesting cases are that of Criner, Vernon, and Jenkins.  Criner is a really good threat on 3rd down and in the red-zone, but he has a tendency to drop easy passes.  Vernon and Jenkins are great options to fill in as a slot receiver, but that position is pretty much filled by Brice Butler and Jacoby Ford.  Jenkins has an added specialty in being a good punt and kickoff returner, but the Raiders already have a bunch of players who can return the ball (Ford, Phillip Adams, Taiwan Jones, D. J. Hayden, etc…).  Both Vernon and Jenkins have been working hard and showing that they can play, but it may not be enough to make this roster.  They will both be on the 75-man roster and 53-man roster bubbles.

At running back, the obvious incumbents are Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings.  Latavius Murray was drafted by the Raiders, but he has been hampered by an ankle injury.  As a matter of fact, he just had his ankle scoped last week, and his return is still questionable.  The two bubble boys for the position of running back currently are Jeremy Stewart and Deonte Williams.  Since we haven’t seen much of Williams, I think he will be on his way out today before 3:00 PM PST/6:00 PM EST.  Stewart should make the 75-man roster, but his chances of making the 53-man roster are questionable at best.

On defense, the Raiders are fat at both the linebacker and defensive back positions.  Currently, I believe DB-Chance Casey, DB-Mitchell White, S-Shelton Johnson, LB-Omar Gaither, DB-Chimdi Chekwa, and LB-Billy Boyko will be the first few names to go before the weekend is over.  If they make it past today, they will definitely be gone by Saturday.  Gaither and Chekwa have been making some plays lately, but the roster is just too deep right now.  Most, if not all, of these players will be gone by Saturday.  They may have a chance to make another teams roster, but they won’t be wearing silver and black this year.

Just Blog Baby will continue to update you on the ever-changing roster all the way through the weekend and into the regular season.  Even though it’s unfortunate for some players, it’s an exciting time for the Raiders team.  Also, the fan’s can really hone in on who to watch over the next few days.  Somebody is going to step-up and make a play for their chance to take a roster spot away from another player, and Raider Nation will have a front row seat.

Thanks for all the current information JBB! Helps keep people on the run informed. If any one drafted 1-7 gets cut, they shouldn’t of been drafted in the first place. Go Raiders & I hope Pryor does well against the Sea Chickens! Even though Seattle couldn’t play, or doesn’t play in Our division anymore there is still deep rivalry between the two franchises up here in the Northwest. Go Raiders!

how long before Matt Flynn gets cut?

  • Shane Schilperoort

Hopefully we can trade him. The Jets need a good back-up. Even the Redskins could use one. The way Buffalo is going, he might fit there. Who knows.

  • Manny San Miguel

I hope you’re wrong about Kasa… the guy makes Megatron look puny! And did everyone take a looong look at his reception? It took THREE guys to bring him down! I know… I know: he doesn’t have Calvin Johnson’s speed, or jumping superlatives… still, Kasa has extraordinary size, talent AND drive.

With playing experience, I know Kasa can be our starting TE, filling a great hole in the RAIDERS offensive game.

I disagree there is no the raiders are getting rid of Omar G he is the only capable backer that could take over the mike position if nick roach gets injured dont forget they put burris on IR. As for chimdi he wont be going anywhere either dennis allen speaks so highly of him and he showed enough cover skills to hold down a roster spot. I do agree with casey I love this kid he is tough not scared to run in the back field to get to the ball carrier he was all over the field in the dallas game but he is more of a project and we already have one of those on the roster his name is T-Jones…….We all know T jones wont get cut just off his special team play alone
