Well Raider Nation, it’s time for the Oakland Raiders to make the necessary cuts to get to the magical number of 53.  This means that at least 22-players must be cut.  However, I’m sure there will be some waiver wire movement within the roster cut-down time frame.  Saturday, August 31st, at 6:00 PM EST/3:00 PM PST is the deadline, and when the smoke is clear, 53-players will be left standing.  General Manager Reggie McKenzie stated that the organization will go with the best players who can help this team win.  Who is getting cut?

Though we won’t know who the actual cuts are until they happen, JBB is going to guess as to who will be released/waived by the team prior to Saturday.  I’m going to start at the quarterback position and work my way down the depth chart.  Remember, none of these guesses are final and anything can happen within the Raiders organization.

Quarterback: Although I like this player, and he may progress into a fine NFL quarterback, I believe the Raiders release/waive Tyler Wilson.  Unfortunately for Wilson, he came to a team that desperately needed a quarterback to step forward and take the reins.  Wilson needs 1-3 years behind a solid starter before he is ready to take over any starting job.  He will be taken off the waiver wire very quickly, and I wish him all the best.  The starter will be Terrelle Pryor.  If it isn’t Pryor, Raider Nation will be in for a long and disappointing season.

    what about punter?

  • Joe Brenner

Don’t see Rivera, Robinson, and McGee being cut. Rivera is going to be huge in the passing game Robinson is a high motor type of guy he would help out a lot on special teams and Mcgee was are best DT in the first two games, He would be a good back up.

  • Josh

You do recognize that an NFL team may only bring one player back once they have been placed on the Injured Reserve (IR) and those players do not count toward the 53 man roster. Only one player may return from IR to the active roster, and must be so designated. The raiders have indicated that Jared Veldheer will be that player. You seem to miss this when you say things like Hanson needs to be released because he is on IR with a groin injury. He does not have to be released specifically because he is on IR with a groin injury. The raiders retain his rights without him counting towards the 53 man roster. NFL teams don’t give away players they can keep without harming their roster numbers.

  • Shane Schilperoort

Yes, I just don’t think that Hanson is the best option. It’s time to get rid of him.

  • Crusader10

Why would the Raiders release Tyler Wilson? Even if he does need development time, it would be silly to release him. Who else backs up Flynn? Pryor is not dependable as a long term option.

  • Julius Beckham Jr

If any of the CB should go it T. Porter all hes done is be out of position and hes been toast on deep balls. P. Adams should take his spot. Hanson has been to good to let go. Porter isn’t the same player anymore

  • Shane Schilperoort

Page 5. Punter is addressed there. However, I hope that King is our guy. Kluwe should be let go.

  • Shane Schilperoort

I don’t know what world you live in, but Hanson hasn’t been that good. As a matter of fact, Hanson gets beat a lot. He is a good special teams player, but not a coverage corner in any way (zone included). Porter is good as the Nickel cornerback, and that is why he was brought to Oakland in the first place. He won’t be called upon to cover big receivers, D.J. Hayden will handle them.

  • Shane Schilperoort

So we drafted him , big deal. The Raiders drafted a quarterback in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Jamarcus Russell, remember him, and we kept him for too long. If he can’t do it in the pre-season, and a team is in a rebuilding process with two viable quarterback candidates, why let him linger on the roster. Al Davis is gone, and the days of letting a quarterback ponder his potential are gone. Let him move on somewhere else, or join the Raiders practice squad. Either way, he won’t be starting this year.

  • Shane Schilperoort

Look, you don’t see it, but there are roster moves that need to be made. I offered my opinion, and you have a right to yours. Any one of the players you mention has the potential to make the Raiders team, but they also could be cut. It’s in Dennis Allen’s and Reggie McKenzie’s court. We can only guess…

  • Shane Schilperoort

However, I do appreciate your opinion as a Raiders fan, and I recognize that mine is only one of many opinions that are put out there during these cut days. One of us could be right and both of us could be wrong, only time will tell…

  • Miles

How can you write reports about this sort of stuff without understanding it? Latavius Murray cannot just walk back off IR to take Stewart’s roster spot, his season is done, because he is on IR. Exactly the same with Hanson, we can’t cut Hanson because he is on season ending IR in which he does not count against the 53. Only one person is allowed to be designated to return from IR a season and Veldheer has that designation. We pay Hanson’s wage this season so if we just cut the guy, when he is fit he is free to sign for anyone therefore we will be paying him to play for someone else, which does not make sense!

  • Julius Beckham Jr

Shane I live in the REAL world which is more than I can say about your evaluation. Look at the stats. Porter has been the most thrown on most completions made on any CB on the Raiders. Not Hanson. P. Adams has OUT PLAYED ALL of them. You go ahead and put your faith in Porter if you want to. And Hayden a 5’9 CB was brought in for tall WR? Really? OK you tell Calvin Johnson that. While your at it make sure Julio Jones and Andre Johnson get a call to. Hayden is good but he’s no Dion yet.

  • Julius Beckham Jr

So true Miles so true. Looks like Mr. Shane should check his stats and know the rules before he writes.

  • Shane Schilperoort

I will let you know that in the real world, Dennis Allen hand picked Porter specifically for the Nickel cornerback position. That’s why he was brought in. I think Adams is a better choice to play cornerback right now too, but he holds a lot, and he gets called for it a lot (go check the stats). As far as Hanson, he gets beat a lot as well. Hayden is unproven, yes, but he will prove himself this season.

  • Shane Schilperoort

First of all, I understand it just fine. Second of all, the Raiders haven’t placed anybody on the season ending IR list, yet. The Raiders are allowed to place one player on the PUP List with the designation to return. Nobody has a “Season Ending IR” designation yet. If that were the case for Hanson or Murray, then I wouldn’t need to mention very much about them, would I? I was simply discussing the fact that I don’t think they’re going to carry four running backs on the roster, and Stewart has always been on the cut line. I like the guy too, but that’s where he’s at…

  • DeathTongue Opus

Unless Flynn is the opening day starter, he should be cut. There’s no need to keep TWO marginal quarterbacks that need to play now to see if they are good enough for another year (Flynn and Pryor). You’ve got to keep McGloin and Wilson for future development.

  • Miles

IR is Season ending period. Miles Burris is on the PUP list.

  • Crusader10

JaMarcus Russell had two years to prove he couldn’t do it. I guess Wilson on the practice squad is a good move. I still think it is too early to give up on someone who was so highly rated just a year earlier.
