One of the best moves made by the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, September 1, was the addition of WR-Greg Jenkins to the practice squad. This college quarterback turned wide receiver, who checks in at 6′ 1″ and 208 pounds, deserved a roster spot, but there was just too much depth at wide receiver for him to make the initial 53-man roster. It is my belief that Jenkins will work his way onto the 53-man roster by the end of the 2013 season. He will do so as a punt and kick return specialist. Furthermore, he would be a nice addition to the offense as a slot receiver too. Who knows how long Jacoby Ford’s health will hold out?
Along with Jenkins, the Raiders also added offensive guard Lamar Mady and tight end Brian Leonhardt to the practice squad. Both Mady and Leonhardt showed potential in training camp, but they didn’t get much playing time during the pre-season. Depth is always a good thing to have, and the Raiders coaches see some things in these two players that they can work with. This leaves just 5 positions left to fill on the practice squad. Look for the Raiders to add a couple more defensive and offensive linemen, and they may try to re-acquire Tyler Wilson off the waiver wire for the practice squad as well.
Along with the practice squad moves, the Raiders claimed offensive guard Antoine McClain and defensive lineman Brian Sanford off of waivers. McClain is 6′ 6″ and weighs approximately 336 pounds. He will more than likely compete with Mike Brisiel at the right guard position along the offensive line. McClain joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2012 as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was relegated to Baltimore Ravens practice squad for the 2012 season.
Brian Sanford is 6′ 2″ and weighs 280 pounds. Like McClain, Sanford joined the Cleveland Browns in 2010 as an undrafted rookie free agent. Sanford was also relegated to the practice squad for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Sanford played in 5 games in 2012 and he totaled a combined 5 tackles during those games.
Looks like the Raiders coaching staff believes that they can work with these players and develop them on the regular roster. More additions to the practice squad are still to come, but things are slowing down right now. I’m sure the Raiders will complete their practice squad by 10:40 AM PST Monday, when they announce the roster that will begin the 2013 regular season. Keep checking in with us as this all comes to a close.
