The Oakland Raiders were already without their starting left tackle Jared Veldheer (Tricep). Second round draft pick Menelik Watson was brought in to contend at the right tackle position, but last week he found himself playing left tackle. He had a decent outing against the Seattle Seahawks, not great, but decent. It looked like the Raiders had found a back-up until Veldheer’s return. However, per Head Coach Dennis Allen, Watson tweaked his knee in practice today, and he is listed as limited and questionable for the game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
This is not good for a rookie player who missed all but the last week of training camp with a calf injury. Now, he must deal with a knee injury. According to Coach Allen, if Watson cannot be ready for the game on Sunday, Khalif Barnes will be moved to left tackle, and Tony Pashos will play at right tackle.
The offensive line was already in an upheaval state without Veldheer, Tony Bergstrom, and the jumbling at left and right guard. Now, the offensive line will once again have to find some type of cohesiveness in order to play well against the Indianapolis Colts defensive line. Make no mistake, the Colts will be coming after whoever is behind center at quarterback.
Now, more than ever, a mobile quarterback that can make plays with his legs seems to be the logical prediction to start on Sunday. Although information has been leaked to the public about the starting quarterback position, Coach Allen is still not naming a starter. However, he made the comment that the starter has been taking snaps with the first team all week. If this is the case, Terrelle Pryor is definitely the guy. Yet, Coach Allen made this statement in his press conference, “Overall, I’m pleased with the progression of Terrelle Pryor. When Terrelle Pryor is out on the field, we’ll have things in place for him (i.e., play packages).” The statement is very vague to say the least. I wonder if Pryor will actually be starting or not?
Other injuries included TE-David Ausberry and K-Sebastian Janikowski. However, Coach Allen wasn’t concerned with Janikowski, and he said that Seabass would be ready to go on Sunday. Ausberry is day-to-day, but he hasn’t practiced yet this week. If he can’t go, look to see a healthy dose of Jeron Mastrud, Mychal Rivera, and Nick Kasa.
Coach Allen named his Team Captains for the game against the Colts. The Captains will be FB-Marcel Reece, DE-Lamarr Houston, and LS-Jon Condo.
