I guess the writing was on the wall and I just didn’t see it. I thought that Oakland Raiders LT-Jared Veldheer was making some better progress, and that was the reason why he snuck past Tuesday, September 3, without being placed on Injured Reserve-Designation to Return. However, the Raiders have placed Veldheer on IR with the Designation to Return. This means that he would not be available to suit up for the Raiders until week 9 of the regular season, barring any set backs.
As a result of this roster move, the Raiders promoted T-Matt McCants from the practice squad to the active roster. General Manager Reggie McKenzie announced the moves on Saturday, September 7. With OT-Menelik Watson out of the game on Sunday with an injured knee, McCants is being added to the active roster to have some added depth.
Matt McCants is a former sixth-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. After being waived by the Giants on Aug. 31, 2012, he was signed to their practice squad where he spent almost the entire season. McCants played in 47 games with 42 starts, mostly at left tackle, over four seasons at Alabama-Birmingham. He was a two-time All-Conference USA first-team selection (2010 & 2011) and was named the conference’s best offensive lineman his senior year.
With Watson out, Khalif Barnes will start at left tackle, and Tony Pashos will get the start at right tackle for the Raiders. Hopefully the two veteran linemen can handle the pass rush that will be coming their way. With Terrelle Pryor at the helm, the Raiders will have their best chance at winning, even with the depleted line.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM EST/ 10:00 AM PST in Indianapolis, IN, tomorrow for the Oakland Raiders. If you’re not at the game, show your pride by tuning into watch. Go Raiders!
