This Monday our starting quarterback gets to go head to head with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Everyone judges Terrelle Pryor on his inexperience and supreme athletic ability. Is he like Kaepernick? Is he like RGIII? What’s his ceiling? I’m here to tell you that the only way to get a clear picture of Pryor is by analyzing him as an individual, not comparing him to other quarterbacks. He’s a smart man and he loves the game. Since he is inexperienced we can’t exactly say what caliber quarterback he is yet. What we can do is see his mindset and get a better picture of the man leading our team.
In his press conference today, you can hear him say the following:
I’m always a confident guy. I know time and time again I’m going to get better at my craft… It’s an ongoing process and I want to get better, but I’m a confident guy nevertheless.
I can’t really measure my confidence; I can just measure my heart. I know I’m going to give it my all and to get me off the field you’re going to have to injure me… I think it’s not really a measure of confidence, I think it’s a measurement of heart and what kind of heart you have to lead a group of men and I have a big heart.
These two quotes tell us a lot about the young quarterback’s mindset. First, he’s confident in his ability to play and improve as he does so. Second, even though he’s confident in his ability, that is an afterthought to him when it comes to playing. He understands that he is a leader and to be successful you need to have heart. What he’s talking about here is passion. No man has ever become a success without passion and he clearly states that he has the passion necessary to be successful.
So is that it? The kid has confidence and heart? That’s his mindset? Nope, there is more. Let’s take a peak at one of his inspirations. His Instagram profile’s most recent image has a description that goes:
It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen. - Muhammad Ali
An other image is the famous picture of Muhammad Ali knocking out Sonny Liston in the first minute of the first round and the photo description says:
It’s a mindset.
Now that’s powerful. Pryor is pulling his inspiration from one of the greatest and most electrifying boxers in history. Terrelle Pryor wants to be the best quarterback possible, and he is going to work hard at it. That is the mindset of the quarterback leading our team. He’s putting in his time studying film. He’s analyzing other quarterbacks and implementing their techniques, especially if he thinks they will make him better. He’s going out of his way in the offseason to hire extra help to make him a better passing quarterback. He’s analyzing his mistakes every game to fix them and become a better player. Our quarterback isn’t just a student of the game, he’s a student of what it takes to win.
What we have is a quarterback who believes. This is what the Raiders need. We saw it in preseason. We’ve seen it these past two games too. The team plays better with him on the field, because he believes they will be successful. If after all of this you don’t believe in Terrelle Pryor, just remember that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. This man works hard and this man will do whatever it takes to bring success to the Raiders. Terrelle, we believe in you. Just Win, Baby!
