Sio Moore was one of the sleeper picks of the 2013 NFL Draft, a linebacker out of the lowly and now extinct Big East, Moore climbed the NFL Draft ranks with solid performances in the Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl before being drafted by the Raiders in the third round. Since then he has been a steal, and now he has his first league honor to show for it.

Sio was named the NFL’s rookie of the week for Week 8 after chipping in the Raiders dominating defensive performance over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Raiders linebacker Sio Moore had the breakout game fans and Raiders insiders were waiting for Sunday against Pittsburgh. With eight tackles (two for losses) and 1.5 sacks, Moore was one of the stars  in the Raiders 21-18 victory at the Oakland Coliseum, a win that mobed the team to 3-4 and has people talking about a potential .500 or better finish for Oakland this season.

With his first player of the week honor, Moore joins Charles Woodson as players to win awards this season. Woodson won AFC Defensive Player of the Week when he tied the league’s defensive touchdown record in a win over the San Diego Chargers.

Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver had nothing but praise for Moore during his Thursday press conference.

“Sio’s starting to do everything faster,” Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver said. “The biggest thing that Sio’s doing right now is how he’s working in practice. … Sio’s feeling it in practice and translating it to the game, and that’s good. It’s good for us, and it’s good for him.”
