According to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun “St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Rodger Saffold is expected to sign with the Oakland Raiders for roughly $8 million per year, but he is still in talks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Jared Veldheer is expected to sign with the Arizona Cardinals for between $7 million and $7.5 million.”
Saffold is an incredible player who played extremely well last year at both Guard and Tackle for the St. Louis Rams.
Is Saffold an upgrade over Jared Veldheer? I would say no, but if Veldheer does choose to leave the Raiders, which has been reported, Saffold would make a great replacement.
Saffold was a Second-Round pick of the Rams in 2010, the same year Veldheer was drafted. Saffold will only be 26 when the season starts, and played his best football last year against the tough defenses of the NFC West.
I would prefer keeping Veldheer while acquiring Saffold at Guard to help solidfy Oakland’s offensive line.
But paying two offensive lineman close to 8 million per year, may be too much for Reggie McKenzie.
