Brice Butler returned to Oakland Raiders training camp on Sunday and wasted no time making the impression he needed to make to stand out in what is a deep competition for spots on the depth chart at wide receiver. The talented receiver who is a favorite amongst fans as a role player already exhibiting the special set of skills that has earned him a vocal set of supporters who feel he should be given an increased role by a new coaching staff on offense headed by coordinator Bill Musgrave.

The Raiders official Twitter account released a video of Butler making one of the best camp plays of the opening week in Napa, destroying the cornerback on a double move after getting jammed up at the line of scrimmage before making a one handed catch that would make Odell Beckham Jr. nod with approval. A play that showcased the type of potential that Butler has in his receiving arsenal, a potential that has yet to be unleashed on the league at a consistent basis since Butler came to Oakland.

Butler’s highlight also made its way across the league as the spectacular catch went viral on Sunday and into Monday. Everyone paying attention to the ability of Butler, even if it was a practice play in early August, the football world opened their eyes to what the Raiders receiver can do on a broken play by making a double move to get open for a back shoulder throw before finishing with a one handed catch for style points.

Butler is in a fight with a deep Raiders receiving roster that added the likes of Michael Crabtree and rookie Amari Cooper into the mix. With Rod Streater, Kenbrell Thompkins, Andre Holmes and UDFA out of Fresno State Josh Harper all fighting for targets as well as roster spots Butler will need to show that talent that he flashes every so often on a consistent basis in order to get a prominent role in the offense. As a role player you couldn’t ask for more talent than Butler, who can make the most spectacular of catches while having speed to burn while me makes them, the hope is that 2015 is the year where the rest of the league finally is forced to pay attention to a player that the Raiders can hope develops into a diamond in the rough find for the front office after a handful of seasons showing that the potential is there for him to breakout one day with catches like the one made yesterday afternoon in Napa.
