Potential is a word used all too much with Oakland. And after a draft filled with ‘boom or bust’ players, the Raiders find themselves in a unique situation. So lets take a look at the worst and best case scenarios for the Oakland Raiders in 2013.

Worst Case Scenario

The season starts minus any extra free agent signings. No help on the defensive line, and no Charles Woodson.

Injuries begin to take their toll. Jacoby Ford and Daren McFadden find themselves on the PUP list and on their way out of Oakland. The defense gets a share of injuries as well. Tracy Porter and Pat Sims are done before week 6.

Rookie D.J. Hayden lacks solid veteran leadership, and suffers a mediocre season. Sio Moore finds himself in trouble with the law and is suspended for multiple games.

The quarterback position is up for grabs all season long. All three quarterbacks start multiple times, but lack the ability to get the job done.

Another 4 win season sets in on Oakland.

Best Case Scenario

Charles Woodson arrives in Oakland to a warm welcome held by Raider Nation. Fans swarm Raider headquarters, and Woodson has no choice but to leave a Oakland Raider.

The signing of Woodson turns the big head of Richard Seymour. Number 92 is given back to the defensive tackle and the line becomes a force to be reckoned with.

The season starts without injury and Sio Moor, Tyler Wilson, and D.J. Hayden all find themselves as impact rookies.

The offense is back to its domineering run game led by Darren McFadden and Menelik Watson. Josh Cribbs, Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore, and Rod Streater create the most dynamic receiving corp in the nation.

The rebuilding season 2013 once was is gone as Oakland marches to the playoffs.

The one year contracts in the linebacking unit show their skill in the playoffs.

The 12 win team contends for a sixth Super Bowl.

We already know the bandwagon community that is San Diego is all but resigned to the fact that they won’t have an excuse to wear powder blue jerseys on Sunday much longer. The Chargers are seemingly always rumored to be the next NFL franchise on the move. However most of the talk centers around a return to their natural home of Los Angeles.

Now comes a real curve ball as Texas Governor Rick Perry is making a plea to get the always disappointing Bolts to bolt for…San Antonio?

Perry cites his relationship Dean Spanos as his ace in the hole for getting the Chargers out of SD and into SA. Obviously there isn’t much to this and is really nothing more than an excuse for me to engage in my second favorite hobby outside of Greg Knapp bashing. Any reason to take a run at the fair weather fans in San Diego is welcomed.

That said it would be odd see the Raiders playing their rivals in Texas every year. Of course the Chargers have never really been rivals in the true sense. Even with their near decade of dominance over Oakland the Chargers are still 10 games below .500 in the all-time series standings. If nothing else this ridiculous move would at least allow the Silver and Black to also own some real estate in Texas.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

So, the Green Bay Packers have decided to part ways with former Raider Charles Woodson and his $10-million salary in 2013. Naturally that has fueled some speculation that Reggie McKenzie, a former front office man for the Packers, will dial the free agent DB in hopes of orchestrating a reunion.

That’s nice and all for the storybook quality of Woodson’s career but the reality is very far from that fantasy.

Charles Woodson will not be a Raider again.

There are any number of reasons why Oakland and Woodson will never cross paths again. Here are the most obvious ones.

1) Woodson has stated his desire to play for a title contender. Unless every NFL franchise except Oakland loses its top players to injury, illness or alien abduction then the Raiders will not be title contenders during the small window of time remaining in Woodson’s playing days.

2) This franchise is in full reboot mode. Inking another veteran DB won’t help to move things forward and will in fact do the exact opposite by stalling the growth process.

3) Has everyone forgotten how things ended for Woodson in Oakland? I know, I know, Bill Callahan isn’t around anymore. But if you worked for Best Buy and your boss was an arrogant douche that constantly threw you under the bus would you ever want to work for that same Best Buy again? I’m guessing the mere thought of sitting in the same employee break room knowing how many hours you spent stewing there is enough to throw your car in reverse the second you hit the parking lot.

4) There is just no money to pay a veteran player like Woodson who will surely get more lucrative offers from other teams.

In theory it’s a nice way to bookend a Hall of Fame career…from the outside perspective at least. On the inside, more specifically the Woodson side of the fence, it’s just not realistic. If/when Woodson enters the Hall of Fame he’ll be doing so as a Packer, not a Raider. This is how he’ll be remembered with his Oakland days a mere footnote in his storied career.
