When last we heard the name Randy Hanson it was in relation to his broken jaw that, depending on who you believe, was the result of either a sucker or phantom punch thrown by then Raiders head coach Tom Cable. As we know no charges were pursued and Hanson soon found himself out of work and eventually out of the NFL.

So when Hanson’s name stared to make its way through the news cycle again it came as no surprise that he was once again involved in an assault case. However this time it was Hanson who was accused of doing the assaulting.

Just under a year ago Hanson, an assistant coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, was accused of battery and assault when he allegedly hit a man over the head with beer bottle outside of night club in Pismo Beach. According to reports Hanson was out cold in the back of the limo when he was awoken by a 52-year-old man who learned a hard lesson – you don’t disturb Randy Hanson when he’s in the recovering stages of a nasty bender.

Hanson’s response to his wakeup call was to crack the man over the head with a bottle causing a broken nose and concussion. A jury agreed with the accuser despite Hanson’s contention that it was self-defense. With the potential of facing jail time Hanson will be sentenced on June 10th.

After it was all said and done, Jimmy Johnson called this almost a week ago. Perhaps that’s why the Chicago Bears waited until after midnight this morning to confirm their hire of former Raiders offensive coordinator Marc Trestman as the new head coach in the Windy City. Or maybe they’re operating on some crazy Canadian timeline being that Trestman was lifted from the CFL.

Whatever the circumstances the Raiders have one less option to replace Greg Knapp. As usual Trestman’s name surfaced again something that has become a bit of a tradition recently during Oakland’s many coaching searches.

So even if the Raiders are again engaging in a coaching search of some kind next year (odds are pretty strong) Trestman won’t be on that list. At least he won’t unless things go horrible in Chicago and he’s one and done. But something tells me Trestman didn’t grind all these years as an NFL assistant that had to go to Canada to get his first head coaching gig only to give it all away after his first season at the helm of an NFL franchise.

Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Who says there is no intensity in the preseason? Certainly not Matt Leinart who was roughed up in his unceremonious NFL homecoming last week in Arizona.

Leinart left the Raiders second preseason game with a finger injury but at the time that seemed the least of Oakland’s concerns for their backup QB. Cardinals’ defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin laid a lick on Leinart that came far too close to the head leaving the former Trojan dazed. Leinart would be carted off the field seemingly suffering a concussion.

In the end it was a digit on Leinart’s non-throwing hand that got the worst of the collision. However it’s Lumpkin’s checkbook that took the biggest hit.

Having spent last season on the practice squad in Arizona, Lumpkin is no doubt hungry to make the 53-man. Perhaps a little too overzealous, Lumpkin’s shot on Leinart will cost him $21,000. That might be chump change to a lot of NFLers but for a guy trying to earn the league minimum it represents a large chunk of a check he doesn’t even have.

So next time you get on your high horse about how much money these guys make keep in mind that jobs are on the line in the preseason. They might be high paying jobs but we’re talking about a line of work for which there are a finite amount of opportunities. Lumpkin’s desire to earn a fulltime football gig might just have written a check his account can’t cash but it will be well worth it if he gets the job. At least until the league starts collection on what he owes it will be.
