Fair or unfair what a player does in his shorts can affect how much he earns by putting pads on. Such is the nature of the NFL’s scouting combine. Every year there’s a combine freak that shoots up draft boards as front office personnel fall in love with a workout while ignoring the game tape.

By the same token there is always some poor soul that loses millions because he doesn’t hit some magic number on the stopwatch or fails to put up 225 an acceptable amount of times.

Which brings me to Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore who did himself no favors with a poor combine showing. As recently as last week many had Moore penciled in as the ideal pick for the Oakland Raiders at #3 in April’s draft. Then a 40 time slower than some offensive linemen combined with a performance on bench press only a cornerback would envy has left many wondering if Moore is even worth a first round pick let alone a top 10 selection.

Before we bury Moore let’s not forget that there have been plenty of guys that have wowed at the combine and wrecked in the NFL.

However there was already some doubt as to whether or not his stock was legit or simply media hype even prior to the poor showing in Indianapolis.

As we know the Silver and Black sure could use a pass rusher and in a draft filled with talent on the D-line it looks nearly impossible to miss. But this is the NFL draft where busts happen more often than a marathon of Cops. Nothing is guaranteed except the fact that one way or another someone will miss the boat on Moore. Either he’s overhyped and will sucker some team into taking him way too high or he was overlooked and will make 31 other franchises pay for passing on his talent.

Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner already had to be high atop Reggie McKenzie’s draft board. Todd McShay recently pegged the draft’s top corner as Oakland’s pick at #3 in his mock draft. And with a glaring need to do something, anything, to upgrade the cornerback position the Raiders were surely going to take a long look at Milliner.

However after today’s performance on the final day of the NFL’s scouting combine Milliner is sure to get a very long look from McKenzie and his scouts.

There are few things that elevate a DB’s draft stock quite like a blazing time in the 40. Let’s just say that Milliner’s official time of 4.37 had to have made Al Davis do a double take as he watched from high above.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg on Dee’s (real name DeMArcus) head turning day in Indianapolis. He also popped an impressive 36” vertical and measured up with ideal size for an NFL corner.

Now before we get too carried away with all the combine porn let’s not forget this guy has the game to back his athletic ability too. Already viewed as a top 10 prospect Milliner is no doubt in the top 5 conversation and possibly entering rare air for a DB by getting considering from Oakland at third overall.

If there is one drawback it’s the surgery for a torn labrum Milliner will undergo making him unavailable to whoever drafts him until the start of training camp at the earliest. But consider how impressive he was given his performance with the injury and you’ll see that flag is Alabama Crimson and not really red at all.

Don’t you dare call West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith a scrambler. He only ran for 151 yards his senior year in Morgantown instead doing all of his damage from the pocket where he racked up more than 4,000 passing yards in 2012.

With that said Smith isn’t a stiff in the pocket that can’t escape pressure when protection breaks down. Today at the NFL’s scouting combine in Indianapolis Smith ran away from the QB competition with an official 40 time of 4.59.

Just behind Smith was Florida State’s E.J. Manuel who is sure to see his stock rise as he posted a 4.65 which is fast considering his size. Arizona’s Matt Scott was the only other QB to break the 4.7 barrier as she slid in at 4.69.

Of course speed doesn’t matter if you can’t throw the rock. Smith’s biggest knock is his lack of consistency and that did show today as he made some impressive throws but also missed the mark on ones you’d expect him to make in his sleep.

For the Raiders there is no indication they’re considering Smith with the third overall pick. In fact there isn’t a lot of momentum for Smith to be taken in the top 5…at least not yet. You never know how this thing will shake out as the evaluation process shifts into overdrive.

As mentioned Smith isn’t a running QB but given the new breed of NFL offense it doesn’t hurt to have a guy under center that can make plays with his feet. While Smith might be fast he’s nowhere near the runner Oakland already has in Terrelle Pryor.
