Aaron Curry’s career hasn’t at all gone according to plan. Coming out of Wake Forest many considered Curry to be the top prospect in the ’09 draft. He went fourth overall and in four seasons is now out of the NFL with the Raiders having recently released the former Seahawk.

Adding insult to injury the Raiders chose not to sign a veteran linebacker to take Curry’s place on the active roster. Instead undrafted rookie Kaelin Burnett has been promoted from the practice squad to take Curry’s place.

Burnett was signed due to his potential to play multiple positions in what was supposed to be a reinvented Raiders defense. The Nevada-Reno alum wasn’t overly impressive in the preseason but he did play well enough that the coaches wanted to keep him close.

Curry being replaced by a practice squader is shocking only relative to his high draft stock. Overall there won’t be any difference for the Raiders who were pretty much Curry-less even when he was healthy.

Here’s one you saw coming from a mile away. The Oakland Raiders have waived Aaron Curry just two weeks after he was finally activated for action this season.

Curry was already being tossed into the draft bust pile before the Raiders traded for him last year. The former fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft failed to live up to expectations in Seattle and did little to help remove the bust label during his short time in Oakland.

During the offseason about the only thing that saved Curry from the ever active axe on Reggie McKenzie’s desk was his willingness to restructure his contract. But knee surgery kept Curry out of training camp all but dooming his season.

Chalk this up to yet another move made during this non-rebuilding rebuilding year.

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-US PRESSWIRE

Aside from Darren McFadden, Tyvon Branch and a select few others most every Oakland Raider was on notice the second Reggie McKenzie took over. Aaron Curry certainly was one of those on McKenzie’s watch list. Were it not for his willingness to restructure his deal odds are Curry went have been out of the East Bay.

It’s not so much that McKenzie wasn’t sold on Curry. The cap situation put the new GM in town in a tough spot so its business, nothing personal.

That said it is very telling that the Raiders are waiting until the drop dead date to active Curry or be forced to shut him down for the season.

Knee surgery has derailed Curry’s second season in Oakland and now his future with the franchise is in serious doubt. Already rookie Mile Burris has shown real potential thanks to continued improvement each week. Philip Wheeler is having a career year in Silver and Black while Rolando McClain is becoming more productive in a lessened role.

In other words Curry is the odd man out no matter what so it’s not all that surprising the Raiders have opted not to active him for Sunday’s game. That means the Raider now have until Wednesday to decide Curry’s fate. Will he be placed on the real IR which ends his season or will the Raiders simply sever ties?

We’ll find out soon enough.
