Last season the Oakland Raiders were among the league leaders in protecting the quarterback. Behind that offensive line Oakland also ran the ball all over the competition whether it was Darren McFadden or Michael Bush carrying the rock.

Despite the success of the line there are still some concerns going forward. Right tackle has been a revolving door with Khalif Barnes the current incumbent on yet another one-year contract. While Stefen Wisniewski’s move to center was inevitable it leaves a question mark at left guard for the future. Currently the ageless Cooper Carlisle is making the move to play left guard with free agent Mike Brisiel playing on the right side.

While Carlisle’s contributions have been consistent as a Raider his days are numbered. Last season the Raiders drafted Joe Barksdale in hopes he might develop into either a quality right tackle or a guard. Ironically the man we’re breaking down today has been compared to Barksdale.

Miami’s Brandon Washington was one of the top recruits in the nation coming out of football powerhouse Miami Northwest. During his time as a Hurricane he played guard before making the move to left tackle as a junior. Most scouts see him as a guard at the next level but he could play some right tackle if developed properly. Currently he’s viewed as a 4^th or 5^th round selection putting him right in Oakland’s sights. Here is a quick analysis.

Brandon Washington, OL, University of Miami

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 320lbs

Strengths: Excels in run blocking. Able to play multiple positions along the line though will likely be a guard at next level with a chance to play right tackle. Very durable and did not miss a game in two years at UM. Agile enough to play in traditional blocking schemes and zone. Left school as a junior but did play one year at an academy before enrolling at Miami.

Weaknesses: Technique needs work. Struggles with consistency. Despite strength can be beaten due to poor footwork. Will need time to develop as a pass protector.
